Impact of the labeling perspective on criminological theory

Different authors have specified different processes by which labeling may influence subsequent deviant behavior. If the first theoretical assertions were often vague on this point, Goode (1975), researchers have recently clarified these processes. This section examines the main criminogenic processes postulated by contemporary labeling. Dark figure crime is a term used to describe the discrepancy between the true extent of crime. and crimes known to the police Mosher, Miethe amp Phillips, 2002: 84. Tierney 2006: 27 refers to this. Labeling theory is a sociological perspective that posits how individuals and groups are categorized or labeled by society. This suggests that these labels can shape an individual's identity, behavior, and social interactions. This concept emphasizes the importance of social control mechanisms in shaping our self-concept. The labeling theory of deviance was extremely popular over the years. However, after a series of influential critiques, the theory's validity was called into question and declared dead. In this article, we examine the application of the labeling perspective to a particular area, juvenile delinquency. This article critically reviews previous research on labeling theory regarding juvenile delinquency and crime and proposes a new study using a recent data set. The labeling perspective is described as it was originally presented, and theoretical developments that have taken place since then are highlighted.
